Gheorghe Hagi appointed as Romania coach

Hagi Appointed Head Coach of Romanian National Team

Former Romanian footballer Gheorghe Hagi has been appointed as the new head coach of the Romanian national team, effective Monday. The announcement follows the departure of Mircea Lucescu, who had served as head coach since 2024. Hagi will lead the national squad for a two-year contract period.

This marks the second time Hagi has taken the role of head coach for Romania. The 61-year-old previously held the position in 2001, immediately following his retirement as a player, where he oversaw just four matches before transitioning to management at Bursaspor in Turkey. Throughout his career, Hagi has accumulated significant coaching experience, including titles with both Viitorul and Farul.

He secured the Romanian championship with Viitorul in 2017 and with Farul in 2023. During his playing career, Hagi represented Romania in 124 matches, contributing 35 goals to the national team’s record. His appointment represents a return to a key role for the veteran football figure, aiming to guide the Romanian national team forward.

The focus will now shift to Hagi’s strategy and preparations for upcoming matches.
