Governor Ismaili welcomes the new mission of the U.S. Treasury’s Technical Assistance for the further strengthening of AML/CFT capacities in Kosovo

The Governor of the Central Bank of the Republic of Kosovo (BQK), Ahmet Ismaili, recently welcomed a specialized technical assistance mission from the U.S. Department of the Treasury. This effort falls under the scope of the new Office of Technical Assistance (OTA) project and was spearheaded by experts Joseph W.

Burke and Norman Smith. According to official statements, the primary focus of this mission is to significantly strengthen the institutional capacities and supervisory expertise of the BQK, specifically within the critical domains of Anti-Money Laundering and Combating the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT). This initiative represents a continuation of established cooperation between the BQK and the U.S.

Treasury. The current support builds upon high-level engagements that took place during the Spring Meetings in Washington D.C. in April 2026.

Furthermore, the engagement follows a formal request submitted by the BQK in October 2024, signaling the bank’s commitment to international financial standards. The objective of the partnership is to enhance the BQK’s ability to monitor and regulate financial activities, thereby bolstering the stability and integrity of the Kosovo financial system. The expertise provided by the U.S.

Department of the Treasury is designed to implement best practices in financial oversight, ensuring the Central Bank remains aligned with global standards for combating illicit financial flows. This targeted assistance aims to improve regulatory frameworks and operational effectiveness across key compliance areas.
