Heavy weapons and resources are a challenge in the fight against violence in North Macedonia

Concerns Raised Over Rising Cases of Violence Against Women

A public debate convened today featuring deputies, ministers, and representatives of civil society, focusing on the escalating number of fatal cases of violence against women. Participants identified significant weaknesses within the current system regarding the timely detection of violence and the provision of adequate protection measures. The Chairwoman of the Committee on Equal Opportunities for Women and Men emphasized the critical need for a coordinated, multi-faceted approach to combatting this issue.

She asserted that effective action requires collaboration between the government, the opposition, and all relevant stakeholders. Specifically, concerns were raised about the system’s capacity for early intervention and support for victims. Representatives underscored the importance of robust preventative strategies and improved response times.

Moving forward, a legislative initiative concerning the law on protection and prevention of domestic violence is underway. Representatives from the government, various ministries, and legislative bodies are scheduled to participate in an oversight discussion on Monday, alongside representatives of civil society organizations. This collaborative effort aims to address the systemic challenges and ensure a comprehensive response to the serious issue of violence against women.
