Historic day in Stuttgart: The new Prime Minister is of Turkish origin, while the first lady is an Albanian from Canada.

Cem Özdemir Elected Premier of Baden-Württemberg

Cem Özdemir, a Green politician of German origin, was elected as the premier of Baden-Württemberg on Wednesday. Özdemir’s parents immigrated to Germany from Turkey several decades prior. Shortly before the election victory, he publicly announced his marriage to an Albanian lawyer.

The election outcome marks a significant shift for the southwestern German state. Özdemir is a vocal advocate for the statehood of Kosovo and has consistently championed progressive policies. Baden-Württemberg, situated in southern Germany and bordering Switzerland, is a region of considerable economic importance.

Despite a geographical comparison often referencing the state as being located in “the feet” of Germany, Baden represents a vital industrial hub. The region is renowned for its prominent brands, including Bosch, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, and Ritter, contributing significantly to Germany’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which totaled approximately 670 billion euros in 2023. This contrasts with the GDP of Kosovo, which is roughly 11 billion dollars.

His victory highlights the growing influence of the Green Party within the state of baden. The election results underscore the diverse demographics of the region and the evolving political landscape of Germany.
