The ongoing debate regarding EU membership has transcended typical political discussions. It represents a fundamental concern for the nation’s future and the well-being of its citizens, as stressed by LSDM chairman Venko Filipce. Speaking on RTVM, Filipce highlighted the significant danger a failure to integrate into Europe presents.
He warned that a standstill in this process carries serious repercussions for the state and its inhabitants. “This concerns the potential displacement of individuals who could vanish within a decade or more,” he stated. He specifically pointed to the prospect of half of Macedonia’s population acquiring Bulgarian passports, leading to emigration and subsequent advantages within the European Union.
Currently, the country’s population stands at less than 1.5 million, a figure he described as a critical matter. The issue at hand is inextricably linked to the nation’s future. Without EU accession, the risk of substantial population decline and the granting of foreign passports to Macedonians is a serious concern.
This underscores the importance of addressing this matter decisively.
