The Kosovo Hydrometeorological Institute (IHMK) issued warnings today regarding periods of intense rainfall across several regions of the country, accompanied by associated thunder and lightning activity. The institute reported that localized conditions were particularly pronounced in the Llap area. Detailed measurements taken from meteorological stations highlighted significant variations in precipitation across short distances.
At the Automatic Meteorological Station located in Shajkoc (serving the Batllavë water supply), recorded rainfall amounted to 15.8 mm. However, just approximately one kilometer away, in the village of Shajkoc, the recorded rainfall was substantially higher, measuring 28.2 mm—a difference of 12.4 mm compared to the station reading. These substantial levels of rainfall were recorded within a single hour, specifically between 11:00 and 12:00.
According to the IHMK analysis, this rate of precipitation qualifies as very high intensity. The reported data points are situated within the Podujeva area of the Pristina Region. The findings underscore the localized nature of severe weather events, where minor geographical shifts can result in dramatically different amounts of rainfall over a short period.
Authorities are advising the public to remain vigilant due to the potential for flash flooding associated with such very high rainfall totals. The IHMK continues to monitor conditions to provide updates on the intensity and trajectory of the weather system.
