Increased cocaine use in Kosovo, a major concern regarding youth involvement.

Concerns Raised Over Rising Drug Use, Particularly Among Minors, in Kosovo

Kosovar authorities are expressing concern over a growing trend of drug use, specifically cocaine, within the country. Safet Blakaj, executive director of the Medico-Psychotherapeutic Center “Labyrinth,” highlighted the issue during an interview with Ekonomia Online, noting a rise in both the prevalence of use and the age of individuals seeking assistance. Blakaj reported that during the first three months of 2024, there were no major deviations from the previous year’s data.

However, a slight increase in the number of individuals contacting the center for help was observed. The primary substance of concern initially identified was marijuana, with the center tracking the age of those seeking treatment. “Over these three months, there has been no essential difference from last year, but it is permissible to say that there is a trend of increasing the number of users, at least the number of those who seek help from us,” Blakaj stated.

The center’s observations suggest a potential escalation in drug use within Kosovo, with a particular focus on monitoring the age at which individuals begin use. Further investigation and data analysis are planned to fully understand the scope of the problem and inform targeted interventions.
