Iran and the United States have agreed to establish a direct communication channel, described as a “telephone line,” within the Strait of Hormuz. The purpose of this mechanism is to prevent and resolve any potential misunderstandings involving vessels transiting the vital waterway, particularly when interactions involve the U.S. or other nations.
During an interview with Iranian state media, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Iran’s chief negotiator, announced the agreement on Monday. Ghalibaf stated that Iran and the U.S. have reached a consensus to establish a coordination mechanism, which includes both a dedicated telephone line and a central coordination center.
This system will allow vessels to contact the center immediately should any ambiguity or operational problem arise. According to reports from Telegrafi, Ghalibaf indicated that, moving forward, the management of the strait will operate according to Iranian agreements. He further stated that the operational status of the Strait of Hormuz “will never return to what it was before the war.” The establishment of this direct line is intended to streamline communication and manage maritime traffic through the strategically significant passage.
