Italian authorities conducted a major anti-mafia operation targeting an organized cocaine trafficking network operating within the L’Aquila area and adjacent municipalities. The operation, designated “Consegna della Cocaina,” was executed in the early hours following directives issued by the L’Aquila District Anti-Mafia Prosecutor’s Office. Carabinieri forces implemented significant measures, including 25 personal security measures and 11 detentions.
Authorities placed 40 individuals under investigation, the majority of whom were identified as Albanian nationals. The suspects face charges related to criminal organization, drug trafficking, and the distribution of cocaine. Investigations revealed that the criminal network utilized young Albanian men, generally around 20 years old, who possessed no prior criminal records.
These individuals entered Italy using tourist visas. According to the probe, once they arrived in Rome, the members of the group would transfer to L’Aquila, where they reportedly received necessary equipment to facilitate their illicit operations. The scale of the anti-mafia effort underscores ongoing efforts to dismantle transnational crime syndicates.
The focus on this particular Albanian group highlights the continued challenge posed by drug trafficking routes operating within Italy, necessitating coordinated law enforcement action to combat organized criminal elements.
