Klekovski: The healthcare budget in Macedonia is one billion euros, but there are many losses in spending

Macedonia has allocated an approximate health budget of one billion euros for 2026. This figure represents about 5.8% of the nation’s GDP and constitutes 15% of the state budget. While this allocation surpasses the respective health budgets of Albania, Kosovo, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, it remains below the levels set by some other countries within the region.

Addressing these financial metrics, the candidate for Minister of Health, Sasho Klekovski, offered a broader perspective on the country’s overall development status. According to Klekovski, the budgetary parameters alone do not capture the complete picture of the nation’s progress. He stated that the current figures reflect general national development trends, asserting that Macedonia performs well in most other key indicators when compared to neighboring countries.

Klekovski emphasized that when considering the broader scope of public finances, including UN shares and general public spending, the nation’s standing is close to the European average. This suggests that while the initial comparison focuses on headline budget numbers, the overall trajectory and depth of public investment in the health sector are aligning with established European benchmarks. This reassessment aims to provide a more comprehensive view of the country’s commitment to its healthcare infrastructure moving forward.
