Kosovo faces a risk of potable water, Salihu: Only in the Drin basin have 142 artificial obstacles been identified.

Kosovo Faces Growing Water Scarcity Concerns

Kosovo is experiencing escalating concerns regarding its water resources, with experts warning of a significant risk of future shortages. This assessment was presented in a recent podcast discussion between Krenare Salihu, executive director of the ECOPANA environmental organization, and Muhamet Hajrullahu, editor-in-chief of Telegraph. Salihu highlighted that Kosovo has long been identified as an area facing “water stress,” a condition that has been gradually worsening over several years.

She noted that the issue predates recent events, with the country consistently appearing on lists of nations experiencing water scarcity or shortages. “Kosovo has been in crisis even before seven or eight years ago… when it was on the list of countries with water stress or water shortages,” Salihu explained to Telegrafi. She emphasized that while climate change contributes to the problem, the primary driver is human activity impacting the environment.

The situation underscores a critical need for sustainable water management practices within Kosovo. Further investigation is needed to fully understand the extent of the challenges and potential long-term consequences for the region. The ongoing risk associated with water availability remains a significant concern.
