Learning from France – once you were sheltered behind stones, today it is no longer enough for me

France has experienced two significant episodes of extreme heat waves this year, events that have resulted in fatalities, placed considerable strain on the healthcare infrastructure, and ignited extensive political discussion. The initial heat wave occurred in late May, followed by a second, more intense event that peaked in late June. During this latter period, temperatures in certain regions surpassed 40 degrees Celsius.

Meteorological services have reported that these instances represent some of the earliest and most powerful heat waves recorded in the nation’s history. The intense heat has significantly impacted daily life, leading to observable disorder in French retail establishments due to high demand for cooling appliances such as fans and air conditioners. Furthermore, the extreme temperatures have correlated with a marked rise in mortality rates, disproportionately affecting the elderly population and individuals managing chronic illnesses.

These conditions were further aggravated by the sustained high heat. The cumulative effect of these successive heat waves has prompted official reviews of public health preparedness and climate adaptation strategies across France.
