The Australian government is taking serious action against major technology companies, including Meta, TikTok, and Google, alleging they’ve failed to respect a significant social media ban for individuals under 16. This follows concerns raised by the nation’s online safety office regarding widespread youth account usage. A recent survey of 900 Australian parents painted a concerning picture, revealing that roughly one-third (31%) of their children still held one or more social media accounts after the ban was implemented.
This contrasts sharply with the 49% figure recorded before the legislation came into effect. Furthermore, the survey indicated that a substantial portion of young people under 16 who previously had accounts on platforms like Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok continued to maintain access. Specifically, 70% of those individuals retained their accounts following the social media ban.
Australian Communications Minister announced on Tuesday that Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, TikTok, and YouTube were all subject to investigation for potential breaches of the rules. The government’s stance underscores the ongoing challenge of enforcing the ban and ensuring young people’s safety within the digital landscape.
