MF: The government of North Macedonia has lowered customs tariffs for 70 goods, fully harmonizing with the EU

The Ministry of Finance has announced significant amendments to the country’s trade regulations, confirming that the government has approved measures to lower customs duties on 70 specific categories of goods. These adjustments are designed to fully harmonize national standards with those established by the European Union. During a recent session, the proposal to amend the Customs Tariff Law received official approval, formalizing the reduction of tariffs and aligning them completely with prevailing EU standards.

This development represents a continuation of legislative reforms initiated last year, with the most substantial changes taking effect on January 1, 2025. At that time, duties were reduced by up to 50% relative to the existing EU tariff levels. The scope of the current reduction is broad, encompassing raw materials, repromaterials, and essential components critical to local manufacturing processes aimed at producing high-value products.

The primary objective of these continuous adjustments to the customs framework is to stimulate domestic production capacity and enhance the competitiveness of local industries within the regional market. By aligning the duties on these varied goods, the government aims to reduce the operational costs for manufacturers. This legislative action solidifies North Macedonia’s integration into broader European trade mechanisms, providing a predictable and favorable regulatory environment for businesses engaged in exporting and domestic high-tech manufacturing.

  1. This move toward EU harmonization sounds like a significant step for Macedonian trade.
