Milanov: Safe food is not a privilege, but a basic right of every citizen

Food safety was characterized as a fundamental right for every citizen, rather than a privilege. This statement was delivered by Oliver Millanov, Director of the Agency for Food and Veterinary (AUV), during an event marking the agency’s 15th anniversary and World Food Safety Day on June 7th. Millanov stressed that ensuring the safety of consumed food is a primary responsibility of the institution.

Speaking at the occasion, Millanov underscored the critical role the AUV plays in protecting public health through rigorous oversight. He provided operational data, noting that the AUV conducted 47,200 inspections in the preceding year and issued 6,770 enforcement measures in response to identified violations. The Director reiterated the agency’s core purpose.

“Since the institution’s formation in 2011, our mission has been clear: to build and maintain an effective, transparent, and modern system for food control and health protection,” Millanov stated. The emphasis placed on this commitment highlights the AUV’s ongoing dedication to maintaining high standards across the food supply chain. By conducting extensive inspections and enforcing regulations, the agency aims to safeguard the public’s fundamental right to consume safe food products.

The AUV continues to operate under the mandate of ensuring that the food available to the public meets stringent safety and quality benchmarks, solidifying its role as a key guardian of consumer health.
