New Hantavirus on Ships

The Spanish Ministry of Health has confirmed that a Spanish national, who was evacuated from the tourist vessel MV Hondius and subsequently placed in isolation in Madrid, has tested positive for hantavirus. This case adds to the ongoing monitoring following the vessel’s voyage. The individual is part of a group of 14 Spaniards who were aboard the MV Hondius when it departed from Argentina in early April.

The trip coincided with an outbreak of a dangerous, rodent-transmitted virus in the region, an outbreak that has already resulted in three fatalities. Due to the nature of hantavirus, which can exhibit a significant delay between exposure and symptom onset, strict public health protocols have been implemented. Following the evacuation, all passengers were transported to their designated locations and are currently undergoing a mandatory 42-day isolation period.

This latest confirmation represents a new case within the country. Authorities noted that the affected patient is identified as a close contact of an individual who was previously ill during the initial outbreak period. Health officials emphasize that monitoring remains under strict surveillance to prevent further transmission.

The Ministry continues to advise vigilance regarding potential exposure routes associated with the virus. The emergence of this new case underscores the ongoing need for caution among the Spanish community regarding travel-related zoonotic diseases.
