Switzerland Sees Record Number of Individuals in Custodial Institutions

Switzerland has recorded a significant increase in the number of people held in institutions for deprivation of liberty. According to data released by the Federal Statistical Office as of January 31, 2026, a total of 7,119 individuals were incarcerated within the country’s correctional facilities. This figure represents the highest recorded number since data collection began in 1988, as reported by Swiss media outlets.

Despite this record, officials emphasize that the incarceration rate is currently lower than it was ten years prior, considering Switzerland’s overall population growth. However, the workload across the nation’s 90 correctional institutions has risen substantially. Consequently, the national incarceration rate has reached 97 percent.

The majority of those held in institutions – 63 percent – are serving sentences for criminal offenses. The increase in the number of individuals deprived of their liberty highlights a complex situation within the swiss justice system, demanding continued scrutiny and analysis of correctional facility capacity and effectiveness. Further investigation into the factors contributing to this rise in the number is ongoing.
