Oil consumption at the borders of North Macedonia has tripled, 200,000 liters per day are purchased by Albanians.

Fuel Consumption at Macedonian Borders Surges, Driven by Foreign Demand

North Macedonia’s fuel checkpoints have experienced a significant surge in sales, with daily consumption tripling in recent weeks. Official data indicates a total of approximately 2 million liters of all fuel types are being purchased daily, a substantial increase attributed primarily to demand from neighboring countries. The rise in fuel consumption has been confirmed by both the Macedonian government and Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski.

According to figures obtained by “Monitor” through government sources, approximately 10% of the total fuel consumption is attributed to foreign citizens. Specifically, Albanian citizens account for a significant portion of this demand, with estimates placing daily purchases at around 200,000 liters. Greek citizens also contribute to the increased consumption, though to a lesser extent.

The increased activity at the borders highlights a growing need for fuel within the region. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely, and further details regarding the specific types of fuel being purchased are expected to be released. The situation underscores the importance of border control and monitoring of fuel flows.
