One year after the tragedy in Kacan, nothing has changed.

Biljana Ivanovska, the previous leader of the Anti-Corruption Commission, has issued a forceful condemnation of how institutions operate, asserting that the March 16th tragedy in Koçan represents a grave warning about fundamental systemic flaws. Speaking in an interview with “4TV,” Ivanovska highlighted that prior investigations and evidence of discrepancies existed. However, these issues were not sufficiently tackled by the governing bodies.

“The tragedy of March 16th in Koçan profoundly affected me,” she explained. “We conducted examinations, including an analysis of the Skopje cafes, revealing that closures should have been mandated, yet they remained open. This clearly demonstrates the influence of certain powerful entities enabling their continued operation.”

Ivanovska further detailed that she and her team presented their findings in a public session and submitted specific recommendations to the appropriate institutions.

Despite this, no action was taken. “We documented these concerns, but our suggestions were ignored,” she stated. Ivanovska’s comments underscore the critical need for accountability and effective responses to systemic weaknesses, particularly in light of the Koçan tragedy.
