Over a thousand fires have been recorded in North Macedonia over six months

According to data provided by the Crisis Management Center, a total of 1,104 open environment fires were recorded between the start of the year and January 1. Analysis of these incidents indicates that the majority of the reported events, specifically 1,051 fires, occurred in areas such as dry grassland, stubble fields, low vegetation, degraded forests, and refuse sites. In contrast, 53 of the incidents were classified as forest fires.

Reviewing the monthly trends, January saw 38 large-scale open environment fires; none of these were categorized as forest fires, meaning all incidents were linked to burning in dry grassland, stubble, low vegetation, or degraded forest areas. The pattern continued into February, where the number of large-scale open environment fires increased to 46. Similar to January, every fire recorded in February was also attributed to the burning of dry grass, low vegetation, or degraded forest land.

The data reveals a sustained pattern of open environment burning across the early months of the year. The high volume of recorded fires in non-forest settings highlights the primary areas of concern. The cumulative total of fires over this period underscores the ongoing management challenges related to vegetation and waste burning practices.
