Petrova-Çamova: Bulgaria has no interest in escalating tensions with Macedonia; the border blockade is counterproductive

Bulgarian Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova-Chamova has commented on planned protests scheduled for the border between North Macedonia and Bulgaria, warning that such demonstrations could negatively impact diplomatic relations between the two nations. The remarks addressed planned actions organized by the “Macedonia” foundation, which are slated to take place this coming Sunday. In a declaration issued to Bulgarian media, Minister Petrova-Chamova stated that the initiatives aimed at the border are likely to be counterproductive.

She emphasized that these activities do not represent the official stance or interests of the Bulgarian government. According to the minister, such unilateral actions fail to contribute constructively to the protection of national interests for either country. While acknowledging the right of non-governmental organizations and other civil structures to organize events, the Foreign Minister stressed the importance of maintaining a consistent and official diplomatic posture.

Her comments serve to clarify the separation between independent civil society activism and the foreign policy decisions of the Bulgarian state. The minister’s statement aims to manage expectations regarding the impact of the planned demonstrations on the bilateral relationship between Macedonia and Bulgaria at their shared border.

  1. It will be interesting to see if these diplomatic words translate into actual border cooperation.
