Political races in the June elections, do new parties have a chance to pass the threshold?

Kosovo Parties Given Deadline to Confirm Participation in Snap Elections

The Kosovo Central Election Commission (CEC) has issued a directive requiring all registered political parties to declare their intentions regarding the upcoming snap elections for the Kosovo Assembly. The notification period extends from May 1st to May 7th, giving parties seven days to confirm their participation or non-participation. This obligation applies exclusively to the 53 currently registered political parties in Kosovo.

The CEC clarified that this requirement does not extend to individuals seeking to contest elections as civil initiatives or independent candidates. Furthermore, parties intending to compete within a coalition must notify the CEC within the specified timeframe. According to the CEC’s guidelines, a coalition can be formed by at least two political parties.

Kosovo law stipulates that a political party is bound to a coalition once certified, until the election results are officially announced. The CEC emphasized the importance of these timely declarations to ensure accurate electoral preparations. This deadline underscores the critical role of registered political parties in the upcoming elections.
