EU Legal Opinion Backs Italy’s Migrant Processing Plan in Albania

Brussels – A high court advisor to the European Union has issued an opinion supporting Italy’s agreement to process asylum requests for migrants in Albania, a move intended to address ongoing legal challenges to the government’s policy. The non-binding opinion offers a resolution to a policy frequently contested within the EU legal system. The assessment aligns with established EU rules regarding the management of asylum applications and represents a significant victory for Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government.

The government’s strategy of processing and potentially deporting asylum seekers through external processing centers has faced numerous legal challenges. The Gjader reception center in Albania, operated by the Italian government, currently houses approximately 90 individuals as of February, marking the highest number since the center’s opening. However, this figure remains considerably below the 3,000 monthly applications that Giorgia Meloni’s administration had initially aimed to handle through these centers.

Prime Minister Meloni has welcomed the legal opinion as confirmation of the government’s approach. The initiative focuses on establishing processing centers abroad to manage the flow of asylum requests and streamline the application process. Further details regarding the operation of these centers and the anticipated volume of applications are still being developed.
