Reuters reports on Zvërnec: Residents oppose the construction of luxury resort

Kostaq Konomi faced resistance last month when attempting to reach what he considers his property on the southern coast of Albania. He was confronted by a hedge fence and individuals in black uniforms who denied him access. Konomi later learned that the specific land in question had been acquired for a planned luxury resort involving international investors, including Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of former U.S.

President Donald Trump. According to reports from Reuters, the property had previously been acquired by the state during the communist era, leading Konomi to express concern over similar developments. “I was ready to take a gun and start shooting,” Konomi, 81, stated to Reuters.

Konomi is one of several residents from the village of Zvërnec who reported to Reuters that their land has been subject to development sales since 2024. These residents expressed apprehension regarding the privatization and development of their community’s holdings. The dispute highlights tensions between long-term local residency and large-scale international investment aimed at creating a luxury resort complex on the Albanian coast.

The situation underscores ongoing disputes over property rights and development control in the region.
