Rrahmani: Successors of expelled Albanian citizens from Kosovo do not benefit from eased citizenship status.

Former Kosovar MP Criticizes New Citizenship Law

Eman Rrahmani, a former deputy from the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK), has voiced concerns regarding the recently approved Law on Citizenship. Speaking to KosovaPress, Rrahmani criticized the legislation, arguing it is unfairly targeted towards historically expelled Albanian citizens of Kosovo. While acknowledging the law’s potential benefits for the diaspora and streamlining administrative processes, Rrahmani identified specific provisions as problematic.

The law grants citizenship to individuals who resided in Kosovo in 1998 and were residents of the former Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, extending this right to their descendants irrespective of birth location. Rrahmani stated that the legislation’s criteria pose challenges for those who were displaced from Kosovo. He emphasized that the law’s stipulations regarding residency in 1998, coupled with the inclusion of descendants, require further scrutiny.

The debate surrounding the new law highlights ongoing discussions about citizenship and identity within Kosovo. Further analysis of the law’s impact is expected as it is implemented.
