Challenges to Medicines Security Persist in Kosovo

Kosovo, April 5, 2026 – Concerns regarding the security of medicines circulating within Kosovo remain a significant challenge, according to officials. The country’s pharmaceutical market is experiencing a notable rise in imported medicines originating from outside the European Union, including suppliers from Asia such as China, India, and Taiwan. These medicines are subject to import regulations established by current legislation and overseen by the Kosovo Agency for Medicinal Products and Medical Devices.

While the availability of potentially lower-priced medications is a factor, the agency stresses the importance of adhering to established regulatory processes. However, the agency reports difficulties in fulfilling its legal obligation to conduct inspections and register these imported medicines. “Despite efforts by inspectors to obtain necessary visas for inspection visits, particularly to China, these attempts have been unsuccessful,” stated a representative.

“Consequently, formal inspections have not been able to proceed.”

The inability to conduct these inspections raises questions about the full security and quality control of medicines entering the Kosovo market. Authorities are continuing to work towards establishing the necessary procedures to ensure compliance with regulations and maintain the security of medicines available to the public.
