Local security experts have issued warnings advising caution to emigrants intending to pass through Serbia while traveling home, noting that such individuals are expected to be under state control measures. These advisories follow recent incidents, including the recent arrest of Osman Selmani. The situation remains volatile, prompting repeated calls from various sources to avoid transiting through the country.
The focus of recent attention has been the detention of Selmani, who was apprehended at the Mutivodë border crossing on April 1. Despite local institutions declaring that he was not a member of the UÇK, Selmani was sentenced to 30 days of house arrest. Adding to the complexity, the War Veterans Organization issued a statement confirming that Selmani was not found to be a UÇK member, while simultaneously advising that passage through Serbia should be avoided.
This follows earlier detentions involving fifteen Kosovars who faced similar charges and served eight-year sentences. In response to the arrest proceedings, Selmani’s son publicly refuted the allegations, stating that the accusations were unfounded and that his family was not in Kosovo at the time the alleged activities took place. The recurring warnings underscore heightened security scrutiny for all emigrants utilizing the border crossings into Serbia.
