Serbia mobilizes the army for “Vidovdan,” a symbol that raises concerns in Kosovo

The army of Serbia is scheduled to conduct a military exercise at the “Pasuljanske Livade” proving ground on June 28th. This date marks the anniversary of the Battle of Kosovo, a day significant to Serbs, often observed as “Vidovdan Day.” President Aleksandar Vučić characterized the exercise as a pivotal event for Serbia, during which the army plans to showcase its latest military equipment. In response to the planned event, Mentor Vrajolli, Executive Director of the Kosovo Security Center, indicated that he does not foresee an immediate threat to Kosovo stemming from the exercise at the “Pasuljanske Livade” site.

Nevertheless, Vrajolli expressed concern regarding the symbolism associated with the event, suggesting it conveys a political message. He interpreted this symbolism as reflecting a potential long-term ambition for conflict involving Serbia. The planned demonstration by the Serbian army on this date has drawn attention due to its historical and political resonance.

While security assessments suggest no direct military danger to Kosovo, the emphasis on the historical commemoration and the display of advanced weaponry has prompted commentary regarding regional stability.
