Serbia strengthens military ties with China, despite Western criticism

Serbia is reportedly expanding its defense capabilities through the acquisition of Chinese weaponry. During a demonstration of Serbian Armed Forces equipment on June 28, President Aleksandar Vučić announced plans for the purchase of additional CM-400 supersonic ballistic missiles and new military aircraft. Vučić characterized the CM-400 missiles as “scary missiles” and confirmed that Serbia intends to increase its stockpiles of this weaponry.

The announcement has drawn commentary regarding the nature and scope of these military purchases. Katarina Gjokiq, a researcher at the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), suggested that the procurement of new fighter jets may also originate from China. Gjokiq noted that acquiring expensive missiles for aircraft that cannot be rapidly deployed may lack strategic sense.

This latest development follows an earlier confirmation in March when Vučić stated that Serbia had acquired missiles from China. The consistent focus on advanced weaponry suggests a significant modernization effort within the Serbian military apparatus. The reported acquisitions of both missiles and aircraft indicate a sustained commitment by Serbia to bolster its defense posture through international military partnerships.
