Sixteen migrants perished along Greek coastlines, having survived without food or water for six days.

Twenty-two migrants seeking to reach Europe tragically perished along the Greek coastlines. At the same time, twenty-six others survived the devastating event and were rescued by a vessel operated by the European border agency, close to the island of Crete. Authorities confirmed the survivors included a woman and a child, and those requiring medical attention were promptly transferred to local hospitals.

The nationalities of the survivors were diverse. Twenty-one were citizens of Bangladesh, four originated from South Sudan, and one was a resident of Chad. The overcrowded vessel had been adrift at sea for six days following its departure from Tobruk, a port city in eastern Libya – frequently viewed by migrants as a gateway for asylum applications into the European Union.

The journey began on March 21st. Survivors described how the bodies of those who had perished were deliberately cast into the Mediterranean Sea, as directed by an individual on board the ship. “During the journey…” they stated.

The rescue operation highlighted the perilous conditions faced by individuals attempting to cross international waters in search of a new life.
