Starting from October 1, Switzerland blocks fake phone numbers: The end of terror calls from unknown numbers that worry thousands of Albanians

Effective January 1st, Switzerland will enforce new and stricter telecommunications security regulations designed to combat the practice known as “Spoofing”—the manipulation of calling identification numbers. According to reporting from the Swiss newspaper Tages-Anzeiger, mobile operators across the country are now legally obligated to implement measures that block calls originating from falsified mobile numbers. Previously, the integrity of phone calls was vulnerable to misuse.

Suspicious organizations or call centers could exploit this loophole, masking their true geographical source. This allowed them to make calls that appeared on the recipient’s phone screen as originating from a legitimate Swiss number, such as those beginning with prefixes like 079 or 076, even if the actual call was initiated from a foreign country, such as Kosovo. The new legislation directly addresses this vulnerability.

By mandating that operators verify the source of incoming calls, the goal is to restore transparency to the Swiss telecommunications network. The regulations aim to prevent the deceptive practice of making international calls appear domestically sourced. These updated requirements represent a significant step in protecting consumers from fraud and unsolicited contact.

The mandate compels mobile providers to ensure that the displayed calling numbers accurately reflect the call’s point of origin. This enhanced security framework is expected to significantly reduce the incidence of identity deception via phone calls across Switzerland, thereby bolstering consumer trust in the national calling infrastructure.
