Teachers in Kosovo unprepared to identify online extremism among students

In less than three years, institutions within Kosovo have identified more than ten students who have been radicalized through online platforms. This pattern highlights the evolving nature of online radicalism, a threat where extremist elements contact young individuals and encourage violent actions via digital environments, including gaming and social media. The methods of spreading extremism have significantly changed.

Today, the manifestation of online extremism moves beyond traditional forms of propaganda imagery. Instead, it leverages sophisticated algorithms, short-form video content on platforms like TikTok and YouTube, and lectures modified by various preachers. These materials are specifically designed to target youth by exploiting vulnerabilities in critical thinking skills.

The process of radicalization is often subtle. Warning signs that authorities monitor include a student exhibiting increasing social isolation, noticeable shifts in language or affiliations with certain social groups, or the gradual acceptance of radical ideologies. This ongoing challenge necessitates continuous monitoring by authorities in Kosovo.

The shift to digital platforms means that combating extremism requires understanding the mechanics of modern digital engagement. Educational and institutional efforts are therefore focused not only on identifying radicalized individuals but also on building resilience against manipulative online narratives. The speed and sophistication of online dissemination require adaptive strategies to mitigate the spread of extremist ideologies among the youth population.
