Over the last decade, the volume of migrants receiving EU citizenship has dramatically increased. Eurostat data reveals a substantial surge, moving from 762,000 passports granted in 2014 to 1.2 million in 2024. This represents a noteworthy rise of 54% over the entire period and nearly 12% compared to the previous year.
The majority of individuals benefiting from this process are non citizens, accounting for 88% of recipients. Furthermore, approximately 11% of those granted citizenship originated from within the 27 member states, having relocated from one EU country to another. Examining the distribution of these passports highlights key nations.
Germany is projected to be the leading issuer, with roughly 300,000 passports issued in 2024, representing a quarter of the total across the European Union. Spain follows closely with approximately 250,000, while Italy grants around 217,000 passports. These figures demonstrate a considerable expansion in citizenship awards within the bloc, primarily benefiting non citizens.
