The Minister of Montenegro sharply criticizes the decision of a municipality to recognize Kosovo.

Montenegrin Municipality Reverses Recognition Decision Following Criticism from Zeta Minister

Podgorica, Montenegro – The Minister of Public Administration of Zeta, Marash Dukaj, has strongly condemned a recent declaration passed by the Zeta Municipal Council concerning the “symbolic reduction” of recognition of Kosovo. Dukaj issued a statement on the X platform, asserting the initiative is detrimental to Montenegro’s European alignment. The minister emphasized that the declaration lacks legal and constitutional authority, clarifying that foreign policy matters fall exclusively within the purview of the state government.

He characterized the action as an attempt by local authorities to overstep their designated competencies, simultaneously posing a risk to neighborly relations – a priority for Montenegro. Dukaj’s statement highlighted the importance of maintaining stable diplomatic ties with neighboring countries. He argued that the Zeta Municipal Council’s decision represents an inappropriate intervention in a sensitive area of state governance.

Following the minister’s criticism, the municipality in Zeta has subsequently revoked the decision to recognize Kosovo. This move was prompted by the concerns raised regarding the potential impact on Montenegro’s foreign policy objectives and relations with its neighbors.
