Kosovo Man Granted Firearm Permit Despite Police Registry Concerns

Prizren, Kosovo – The Ministry of Interior issued a firearm permit to Kujtim Koçi in August 2024, despite his inclusion on the Kosovo Police’s narcotics registry. Nine days after receiving the permit, Koçi was arrested and detained for 48 hours by the Kosovo Police on August 23, 2024, on suspicion of “possession of narcotics.”

During the detention, authorities conducted a verification through the International Cooperation Office ILECU. This institution subsequently revealed that Koçi had two outstanding national arrest warrants from Switzerland and France.

The Prizren Regional Police, citing the Law on the Protection of Personal Data, declined to provide further information regarding the case. A statement released by the police indicated they were referencing Law No. 06/L- [redacted for brevity].

The circumstances surrounding the issuance of the firearm permit are currently under review, raising questions about the vetting process employed by the Ministry of Interior. Further investigation is ongoing.
