Kosovo Joins Global Initiative Supporting Child Welfare
Kosovo has become the 35th nation worldwide to formally commit to the Global Card for Children’s Care Reform, marking the first time a country from the Balkans has joined the initiative. The announcement was made by the Ministry of Labor, Family and Values of the Unification of Freedom. The ministry reports that it has secured acceptance of five national commitments from the Government of the United Kingdom, designed to bolster child welfare programs within Kosovo.
These commitments, spanning the period 2026-2028, are built upon existing legislation focused on the protection of family and children. Key priority measures outlined in the agreement include strengthening preventative efforts to combat family-child separation. The ministry also seeks to expand integrated family and community services, broaden the scope of alternative family care options, and digitally modernize the data system used for tracking cases.
Furthermore, the initiative includes a focus on enhancing the professional capacity of personnel working within the sector. “Based on best practices,” the ministry stated, “these commitments represent a significant step forward in safeguarding the well-being of children and families within Kosovo.” The Ministry of Labor, Family and Values continues to work with the UK government to implement these vital reforms.
