North Macedonia Drops Extradition Request for Gruevski

Budapest, Hungary – The request for the extradition of former North Macedonian Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski has expired, according to reports. The Hungarian media outlet Telex, alongside the SDK, has indicated that the current North Macedonian government, led by VMRO-DPMNE and Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski, has shown no interest in pursuing his return to the country. Previously, the preceding government of LSDM had sought Gruevski’s extradition from Hungary, where he has been granted political asylum.

However, that initial request has now lapsed, and the new government has not initiated any renewed efforts. Currently, there is no active Interpol arrest warrant in place, further bolstering Gruevski’s position within Budapest. Communication regarding the matter remains largely procedural, with responses from the Ministry of Justice currently being delivered via postal channels to relevant courts, prosecutors, and the Ministry of Interior.

The situation reflects a shift in governmental priorities following the change in leadership within North Macedonia.
