UK and France to Convene Defense Ministers to Address Strait of Hormuz Security
The United Kingdom and France will host a meeting today involving 40 defense ministers to discuss strategies for safeguarding vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz. The gathering aims to outline potential military contributions from coalition partners should a cessation of hostilities occur. According to reports, nations involved intend to detail the specific support they can offer to protect the critical waterway.
U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth characterized the initiative as a “distraction,” while Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed concerns regarding the timing, deeming it “lacked sense.”
Co-chaired by UK Defense Secretary John Healey and his French counterpart Catherine Vautrin, the session comes amidst ongoing tensions in the region. The United Kingdom has already deployed its destroyer, HMS Dragon, to the area, supported by the RFA Lyme Bay, a dedicated support ship.
Iranian officials have stated that Tehran remains “prepared for any option,” reflecting the complex geopolitical landscape. The focus of the meeting centers on coordinating defense efforts within the strait and securing maritime trade routes. Discussions are expected to center on bolstering security measures and outlining potential responses to evolving circumstances.
