Tomorrow, a new effort to reach an agreement on the Electoral Code, Gashi: It is good to have electronic voting for the diaspora

Parliamentary group coordinators are scheduled to meet again tomorrow at a joint session. This gathering represents a continued effort to reach a consensus on the proposed new Electoral Code. Securing this agreement is critical as it aims to approve the necessary legal framework before the European Union’s established deadline for advancing the current reform agenda.

During a briefing with journalists today, the Speaker of Parliament, Afrim Gashi, addressed the topic of electoral participation, specifically focusing on voting mechanisms for citizens residing abroad. Gashi stated his support for enabling diaspora voting, provided that the state guarantees the absolute secrecy of the ballot. “In principle, I am supportive of electronic voting for the diaspora; I am even favorable to its implementation domestically,” Gashi noted.

He emphasized that achieving the principle of universal suffrage—ensuring every citizen has the right to vote—is contingent upon the state’s capacity to safeguard the confidentiality of the vote. He stressed that successful implementation requires mutual goodwill and deep understanding among all stakeholders involved in the process. The impending meeting tomorrow underscores the legislative body’s commitment to finalizing electoral procedures.

The ongoing effort to harmonize the national code with international standards remains a primary focus for parliamentary leaders as they work toward meeting the stipulated EU timeline.
