Toshkovski: We cannot allow domestic violence to move into schools; it must be recognized and prevented before it becomes a criminal act.

The Minister of Interior, Pançe Toshkovski, participated today at the launch event for the project titled “Breaking the Cycle of Violence – Systematic Prevention of Domestic and Peer Violence through the Education System,” which was hosted by the Government of the Republic of North Macedonia. During his address, Minister Toshkovski drew attention to concerning data compiled by the Ministry of Interior, indicating a marked increase in both instances of domestic and peer violence across the country. He emphasized that exposure to domestic violence has been identified as one of the most significant risk factors contributing to aggressive behavior among children and young people.

Minister Toshkovski presented recent statistics to underscore the urgency of the prevention efforts. He reported that between January 1 and May 28 of this year, the Ministry registered 768 criminal cases specifically related to domestic violence. These figures underscore a growing public health and safety concern regarding patterns of violence within communities.

The launch of the new project aims to address these escalating issues systematically by integrating prevention strategies directly into the educational system. The initiative seeks to equip educators and the community with resources to mitigate the cycle of violence before it escalates. Minister Toshkovski stressed that a multi-sectoral approach involving law enforcement, education, and social services is crucial for effectively tackling the pervasive threat of domestic and interpersonal violence.
