Varoufakis: The image of Kosovo has improved dramatically over the last three years.

Varoufakis Expresses Positive Views on Kosovo’s Image

Former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis, leader of MeRA25, recently commented on the evolving perception of Kosovo during an appearance on “Debat Plus.” He noted a significant improvement in the image of Kosovo within Greece over the past two to three years. Varoufakis attributed this shift in opinion, in part, to Kosovo’s involvement in recent conflicts, specifically its disputes with North Macedonia. “This conflict has taken us back decades,” he stated, “it has taken Macedonians and the region back, so for me what is important is that we move away from pointless conflicts.”

The prominent economist identified nationalism as a key factor contributing to Greece’s reluctance to formally recognize Kosovo.

Varoufakis suggested that within Greece, there is a belief that recognizing Kosovo would trigger “legitimization” of Northern Cyprus, a state currently acknowledged solely by Turkey. Varoufakis argued that this approach represents a problematic concern, prioritizing the potential implications for Northern Cyprus over a direct resolution regarding Kosovo. He emphasized the need to move beyond unproductive regional tensions.
