We need to sign Xhaka, we need a leader – Man Utd legends debate the Sunderland captain

Scholes Dismisses Schmeichel’s Xhaka Recommendation

Manchester United’s decision-makers were presented with a potential transfer target during the summer window, following a recommendation from a familiar face – former goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel. The former Arsenal captain, now serving as Sunderland’s club captain, was suggested as a signing by Schmeichel, who discussed the potential move on the podcast, “The Good, The Bad & The Football.”

Schmeichel advocated for United to pursue Granit Xhaka, arguing that the midfielder would strengthen the Reds’ midfield options. However, Paul Scholes, then the club’s interim manager, immediately countered the suggestion.

“No, Pete,” Scholes responded, “I’ve looked at it, but maybe you’re in the same situation as Casemiro, aren’t you?”

Scholes’s rejection highlighted a differing opinion regarding United’s midfield needs. Schmeichel maintained his belief in Xhaka’s potential contribution, though the former goalkeeper did not elaborate on his reasoning at the time. Ultimately, United pursued other transfer targets, and Granit Xhaka remained at Arsenal.

The former midfielder continues to play for Sunderland.
