WhatsApp is reportedly expanding the availability of its encrypted cloud backup feature to include iOS users. Previously, reports indicated that whatsapp had begun developing the capability to allow Android users to back up their chats to its encrypted cloud storage. More recently, sources have indicated that the Meta-owned company is now testing this enhanced feature on the iOS platform.
This development was noted by users on WABetaInfo, who discovered the functionality within WhatsApp version beta 26.28.10.16 for iOS devices. Currently, the backup procedures are segmented: Android users typically utilize Google Drive for their chat backups, while iOS users rely on iCloud. The integration of this new feature aims to provide greater flexibility to the user base.
With the update, both Android and iOS users will gain the option to select their preferred backup destination. They can continue using their established native cloud services (Google Drive or iCloud) or opt for WhatsApp’s dedicated cloud backup solution. This new dedicated service reportedly offers an initial allotment of 2GB of free storage space for users.
The rollout of this unified backup system signals a move toward standardizing data recovery methods across both major operating systems within the WhatsApp ecosystem.
