Where do the talks between the US and Iran currently stand?

Negotiations between the US and Iran are attempting to resume following a postponement that led to the cancellation of a trip for US Vice President JD Vance to Switzerland. The technical discussions, originally set to begin on Friday, were abruptly delayed due to an escalation of deadly attacks between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. The parties have since renewed a fragile ceasefire, a situation that has at times complicated the negotiation process between the US and Iran.

Israel has faced increasing criticism even from its key ally regarding its actions. Both JD Vance and former US President Donald Trump have criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s offensive in Lebanon during the peace talks. Despite this, Trump recently affirmed that his relationship with Netanyahu remains strong, stating, “I’ve always had a good relationship with Bibi.”

US special envoy Steve Witkoff is reportedly traveling to Switzerland, and he is expected to be accompanied by Jared Kushner.

Witkoff and Kushner previously spearheaded negotiations with Iran that resulted in an initial memorandum of understanding. While the exact date for the resumption of the talks remains unclear, they are anticipated to take place in the Swiss resort of Bürgenstock. The Swiss Foreign Ministry announced on Friday that preparatory work at Bürgenstock is ongoing.

Negotiators are currently working toward a final agreement with a deadline of 60 days.
