Kosovo Commemorates World Press Freedom Day, Marking Progress in Press Freedom Rankings
Today, May 3rd, marks World Press Freedom Day, an annual observance established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993. Globally, the day recognizes the fundamental right to freedom of expression and the vital role of a free press. In Kosovo, various activities are planned to honor the occasion.
The Kosovo Journalists’ Association is hosting a panel discussion today, themed “The Impact of the Profession on the Mental Health of Media Workers,” as part of the 2026 World Press Freedom Day celebrations. According to the latest World Press Freedom Index, Kosovo currently ranks 84th out of 180 countries. This represents an improvement over the previous year’s ranking of 99th.
The index assesses the environment for journalists around the globe. Furthermore, data from the “Without Borders” journalists annual report for 2018 indicates Kosovo’s position as 78th, a four-place increase from prior assessments. These rankings highlight ongoing efforts to bolster press freedom within the country.
The observance of World Press Freedom Day underscores the importance of a free and independent press in a democratic world.
