The Constitutional Court of North Macedonia convened today for its ninth session, resulting in the annulment of Law No. 39/2026, officially published in the “Gazette of the Republic of North Macedonia,” which amended and supplemented the Law on Judges’ Salaries. The final ruling to invalidate the law, adopted in February 2026, centered on the significance of judicial independence and autonomy as integral components of the constitutionally guaranteed independence of the judicial branch.
The court emphasized the fundamental values of the constitutional order, including the rule of law and the separation of powers. Following the initiation of a procedure to assess the constitutionality of the Law on amending and supplementing the Law on Judges’ Salaries, the Assembly opted not to proceed with action. The court’s decision underscores the importance of maintaining a fully independent judiciary within the Macedonian legal system.
