Chemical Leak at West Virginia Plant Results in Fatalities and Multiple Injuries

Institute, WV – Two individuals have died and nineteen others were hospitalized following a chemical incident at the Catalyst Refiners plant in Institute, West Virginia. Authorities confirmed the incident occurred while workers were preparing to deactivate portions of the facility. Kanawha County Emergency Management Director C.W.

Sigman detailed that a chemical reaction involving nitric acid and an unidentified substance was the cause. “A violent chemical reaction occurred, and they reacted immediately too strongly,” Sigman stated during a press conference. He emphasized the heightened danger associated with the beginning or end of chemical processes, noting, “The start or end of a chemical reaction are the most dangerous times.”

Seven individuals sustained injuries as a result of the event.

All injured personnel were transported to local hospitals, with one individual admitted in critical condition. The investigation into the precise circumstances surrounding the chemical leak at the plant is ongoing. Authorities are working to determine the exact substances involved and assess the full extent of the damage.
