“How to be a boy?”: The Market of Advice, Myths, and Legal Loopholes in Kosovo

Parents Seek Advice on Ensuring a Male Child

A recent Facebook post prompted a wave of advice seeking how to ensure a future child is a boy. The initial post, from a mother, began with the question, “Does anyone have a mother with three daughters and then a son?” This query triggered a wide range of suggestions circulating online and directed towards gynecologist Merita Demiri Demolli. Numerous recommendations were offered, including consulting the Chinese calendar, utilizing specific beauty bar soaps for bathing, altering the position of the crib, timing conception to ovulation day, and incorporating the consumption of lamb and mutton into the diet.

Some suggestions even involved increased coffee intake by men. Dr. Demiri Demolli, a gynecologist, has repeatedly emphasized the lack of scientific validity behind these methods.

“The methods that circulate as certain diets, positions during intercourse, or ‘planning’ according to ovulation, have no proven scientific basis,” she explained to Radio Free Europe. The widespread interest highlights a common desire among parents to influence the gender of their children. However, experts stress that there are no reliable natural techniques to guarantee a boy.
