Ibrahimi: Municipalities should not pay for support staff during elections.

Association of Municipalities of Kosovo Expresses Concerns Over CEC Funding Mandate

The Association of Municipalities of Kosovo (AKK) has responded to the Central Election Commission’s (CEC) recent directive requiring municipalities to cover the costs of support staff involved in the electoral process. According to Sazan Ibrahimi, the Executive Director of the AKK, this represents an inequitable redistribution of financial obligations and a direct challenge to municipal budgets. Speaking to IndeksOnline, Ibrahimi stated that municipalities are currently facing considerable financial strain.

He highlighted a key concern: the central government’s previous failure to fulfill payment obligations for similar support staff from prior elections. “The AKK maintains that the organization and financing of elections are primarily the responsibility of the central level,” Ibrahimi emphasized. The association’s position underscores the existing pressures faced by municipalities.

The mandate to shoulder these costs raises questions about resource allocation and the financial sustainability of local government operations. Ibrahimi’s comments reflect a broader debate regarding the division of responsibilities within the electoral process and the support provided to municipalities.
