Seventeen children were rescued from a dilapidated residence in a rural area of Ohio on Wednesday, after authorities reported that the minors had been confined to a single room under “deplorable conditions” for the majority of the past four years. The children, who officials stated belong to the same family, were found living in squalor with evidence of human deprivation nearby. The group includes both boys and girls, ranging in age from one and a half to 18 years old.
According to reports, several of the children exhibited significant developmental issues. One 18-year-old individual with developmental disabilities reportedly did not know how to spell her own name. Furthermore, some of the rescued children were unable to speak.
During a press conference, County Sheriff Vinton, Ryan Cain, described the living conditions, stating that most of the wards were kept in better conditions than the children. The rescue highlighted severe neglect within the Ohio community. The ordeal involving the children has prompted investigations into the circumstances that allowed such prolonged confinement and deprivation to occur within the family unit.
